The Kohain Gadol
Materials and Instructions: This
project can take a couple of days and requires skills of 9 years and up.
The teacher can also make this project as a display model or a prop.
Have each child bring in an empty
toilet paper tube. Purchase 1 inch or 3/4 inch diameter styrofoam balls
come about 12 in a pack at Walmart $2, pipecleaners, use of crayons, a
little masking tape 1/2 inch width, a sheet of dark purple felt ( this
can make 12 projects), Tacky Glue (ACMoore), gold glitter, Package of
little bells( ACMoore 45 in a pkg at $2.50 1 pkg makes 9 projects), use
of hand hole punch, small googly eyes, 1 cotton ball, and use of markers.
Put holes on either side of the
tube about 2/3 up with a pen.. Make small hole in styrofoam ball also
with a pen and insert 2 ends of a pipe cleaner thru the hole at the same
time, pull the ends thru the hole leaving a little loop on top of the
ball. This ball is going to be the "Head " of the Kohain and
the two ends of the pipe cleaner are going to be the "Arms".
Where the "Neck" should be twist the pipecleaners together just
once (See picture). The Cardboard tube is the "body" of the Kohain.
Put pipecleaner "Arms" thru holes in the tube (body). Adjust
styrofoam head to look centered, the Kohen does not have much iof a neck.On
the lowest part of cardboard tube put a strip of masking tape around it,
making a band of white (see pic). Printout the Meil Page and Photostat
for each child.Color the pattern light blue and cut out.Fold pattern in
half dividing the head hole and place on the Kohain. The should be above
the white band on then bottom of the tube. This white band represents
a garment called the "Kesones".Glue edges of the Meil at the
about the Kohains "Hips" and downward. also glue the lower half
of the Meil onto the tube front and back and let dry for a few minutes.
With a hole punch make 2 holes on either side of the tube about a quater
inch apart around the spot where the edges of the lowest part of the Meil
were glued on either side of the tube ( See picture). With another pipecleaner,
string pipecleaner thru the 4 holes made at the base of the tube Have
the 2 ends of the pipecleaner meet at the front of the Kohain ( you decide
which is front or back), and cut of the excess pipecleaner. Take the pipecleaner
out of the holes and reinsert stringing 2 belles on to the pipecleaner
for the back and 3 belles for the front of the Kohain. Then twist the
two ends together. Printout Choshen and Aifod page. Color the Aifod (apron)
red or purple. Cut out pattern and use holepunch where necessary. Cut
small square of felt to fit the square piece in the pattern. Make 12 dots
with Tacky Glue onto the felt piece, the sprinkle gold glitter over the
dots and shake off excess glitter. Likewise, put thin strips of glue along
the "straps" of the Aifod and sprinle with the gold glitter.
Glue felt piece to the square piece on the pattern with the Tacky Glue.
Place the cut out pattern on to the Kohain, glue where necessary and attatch
a litle pipecleaner belt to the 2 ends of the Aifod (apron) where the
hole punches are. On the to[p of the Kohens "Head" inside the
little loop left on top of his head by the pipecleaner glue in a cotton
ball with Tacky Glue. Glue a little piece of paper on the front on the
cotton ball, the paper can have "Kadosh Le Hashem" on it or
just gold glitter. The Face of the Kohen can be done with marker and googly
eyes glued on with Tacky Glue. .
